About skateboard riser pads

02nd Sep,2018

Riser pads, or risers, are hard plastic pads that can be inserted between the skateboard trucks and deck to raise the overall height of the skateboard. They are used to avoid wheel bite, which occurs when the wheel rubs the skateboard deck during a turn or just after a trick. Wheel bite suddenly stops the wheel’s motion, which can mean a nasty wipeout for you and damage for your skateboard wheels. Depending on your skateboarding style, riser pads can preserve your skateboard deck by reducing the risk for stress cracks where the deck and the trucks meet.

Riser pads come in a variety of color, designs, and thickness levels. Browse Warehouse Skateboards’ vast selection of skateboard riser pads to trick out your skateboard.

Deciding whether or not to install risers

The larger your wheels are, the greater chance there is for wheel bite. If your skateboard has large wheels, such as on a longboard or cruiser, you may want to consider risers. In general, the longer the board and the larger the wheel, the more height is needed in a riser pad. Shortboarders may also use them to prevent wheel bite after landing a skate trick, thus prolonging the life of their board. They also have the added bonus of giving your board extra pop, since they add more distance between the tail and the ground.

Another reason for skateboard riser pads is that they absorb some of the shock of impact, which can help keep your hardware from vibrating loose. Skateboard decks that use wheels smaller than 55mm do not typically require risers; however, even 1/8″ risers can help keep your hardware in place.Skateboard decks that use wheels smaller than 55mm do not typically require risers; however, 1/8″ risers can help keep the hardware from vibrating loose.

Hardware size calculator

If you decide to put risers on your skateboard, you’ll need to adjust your hardware size to accommodate the extra height. Consult the chart below to figure out what hardware length matches your risers.

No Riser – 7/8″ to 1″ hardware
1/8″ Riser – 1″ to 1 1/8″ hardware
1/4″ Riser – 1 1/4″ hardware
